Helpful Backgammon Strategy

Some bits of backgammon strategy can be useful in understanding the concept of the game, and aide in one’s decision of how to move their backgammon checkers in throughout the development of the game. One simple backgammon strategy is called priming. This strategy involves creating 6 made points in a row, usually done best on your 2 thru 11 points, making it impossible for your opponent to make any backgammon moves across your barrier and therefore slowing them down in the race. Another simple backgammon strategy, nearly the opposite of priming, is distributing. This is trying to evenly distribute your made points along the board, giving you more options of where to move with every roll, and also decreasing your opponents’ options. A simple backgammon strategy utilized when you’ve “hit” your opponent is called “blitzing,” and involves quickly trying to concentrate on blocking your homeboard and making it more difficult for your opponent to re-enter the game.

Some simple strategy should only be used when one is behind in the game, while other backgammon moves can be better used in the beginning or throughout the game. Some strategic ideas may be more harmful than good depending on the development of the game, and practice can help one understand when it is best to use which strategy.
